Marie LAFAY

June 9, 2009

LAFAY (Wood) Marie It is with heavy hearts that the family of Marie Lafay, of Taber, our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, announce her death on June 3rd, 2009 at the Chinook Regional Hospital, just one month after celebrating her 90th birthday with many friends and family. Marie was born on the family farm near Collins School in the Lousana area of Central Alberta, on May 2nd 1919, during a blinding snow storm she always said. Marie married Sidney G. Wood on October 27th 1938. Together they had four children - Don, Carole, Beverly and Terry. They farmed in the Lousana area until 1967 when they moved to Red Deer. Marie took great pride in her family and worked hard at everything she tried. She was also famous for her hospitality, quick wit and humour. Marie worked in Red Deer at Eaton's and at McGavin's bread store. She finished her working career as a Supervisor for a public opinion research company which she greatly enjoyed. After Dad passed away in 1982, Mom continued on with her life eventually marrying Jack Lafay, the Mayor of Penhold, in 1986. After Jack's death Marie moved to Taber in 1992 where she resided happily at Homestead Manor. She spent many pleasant hours with her close friend Joe Schmitz who passed away in 2007. Marie was an active member of the Royal Purple in Delburne and Taber and served as an Honoured Royal Lady of the Delburne branch. She was also a member of the Taber Legion and United Church ladies auxiliary. She will be remembered as an avid crib player, participating in many tournaments. She was always busy knitting for the family or Blankets for Canada. Her main love was her family and no gathering was complete unless she was there with her famous baking. Christmas was also never complete without her renowned "Granny's Buns". Mom is lovingly remembered by three of her four children: Don (Nancy), Carole and Terry (Carol); Grandchildren Dave (Geraldine) Wood, Shelley (Pete) Teertsra, Brian (Liz) Wood, Tyler and Andrea Hogan, Michelle (Matt) Olfert, Veronica (Chris) Falk and Cara Wood; and Great-Grandchildren Isabella and Georgia Wood, Jaina and Lewis Olfert, Elliott Wood and Timothy Falk. Mom was predeceased by her daughter Bev (Steve) Klemen in 2008. Our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother was truly a testament of a fulsome life well lived and leaves friends and family with many cherished memories. A Celebration of Marie's life will be held at Parkland Funeral Home (6287 67A Street, Red Deer, Alberta) on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. with the Reverend Fran Hare officiating.
