Martin KAUFMANN

KAUFMANN Martin Kaufmann passed away peacefully on Sept 6, 2008 at the Lacombe Health Care Center after a brief illness. He was born on Sept 7, 1919 on the family farm near Cavell, SK. He was educated at a one room school near the farm where he got to Grade 8. He worked on the farm as well as at an uncle's retail outlet until 1941 when he was inducted into the Canadian Army. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant and served with the British Forces in Holland in 1944. After the end of the war, he returned to where he was promoted to Captain. He was released from the military in 1946 and continued with his education, graduating from the University of Saskatchewan in 1953 with a Masters Degree in Agronomy. Martin then enrolled at the University of Wisconsin at Madison to obtain his Ph D. While there, he met an education student, and they were married in June, 1954. He graduated with a Ph D in Agronomy in 1956 and moved to Lacombe, AB to work at the Agriculture Canada Research Station. He was head of cereal crop breeding until his retirement in 1984. He resided in Lacombe until his passing. Martin was an active member of Lions Club, The Legion, and the Knights of Columbus. He served as president for each of these organizations, as well as District Governor for the Lions. In addition, he was Chief Instructor of the Lacombe Army Cadets for 15 years, and Chairman of the Board for an additional 10 years. He also enjoyed many sports, especially golf and curling. He was awarded many professional and service awards, including life memberships to the Canadian Seed Growers Association, Lions Club, Royal Canadian Legion, and the Knights of Columbus. In 1987, he was inducted into the Alberta Agricultural Hall of Fame, with credit for developing 1 Wheat, 1 Barley, and 5 Oat varieties. Martin was an integral part of the Parish of St. Stephen's Catholic Church for 52 years. He served 2 terms as chairman of the Parish Council, as well as numerous other parish ministries, including leading the singing for over 30 years. He was predeceased by his mother Elizabeth, father John, 7 brothers, 4 sisters, son Paul, and 1 infant Grandson. He is survived by his loving wife Ruth, son Tom, daughters Ann and Jean, 1 sister Theresa Roth, 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 5128-53 Street, Lacombe, Alberta.
