LOUGHEED Marvin Norman Lougheed MD, FRCP(C), FACR Died peacefully on June 9, 2009 in Roanoke, Virginia, age 92. Born in Waterhole, Alberta 18, April 1917, to Hugh Morrison Lougheed of Morden Manitoba (born 1883 Singhampton, Ontario) and Wilhelmina (Minnie) Kendall (born 1893 Morden). Family was all boys, with brothers Earl, Mel, Lloyd, Ken, and Glen. In 1921 family returned to Manitoba and farmed in Bagot with land north and south of the one-roomed Elsmith School that stands today. Skilled horseman, carpenter, and student, attended Elsmith, the University of Manitoba then University of Iowa. BA in Radiation Physics 1943. Married Elsie Christine Sorensen of Dundas, Minnesota in 1943 and moved to Montreal, Quebec to study medicine. They raised six children: Melford, Ellen, Donna, Kendall, Jill, and Sean. Received MD from McGill University in 1947. Completed internship at the Montreal General Hospital; completed cancer training at Swedish Institute (Seattle 1951), Diagnostic Radiology (McGill 1952), Radiotherapy (McGill 1953). Academic awards include: Fellow, Royal College of Physicians (Canada), and Fellow, American College of Radiology. Worked for 20 years at the Montreal General, Montreal Children’s, Jewish General and Notre Dame hospitals; was on the teaching staff of McGill University and published many papers. In 1971, moved to Roanoke, Virginia to establish a new Cancer Center. He served as Director, Radiation Therapy at Roanoke Memorial Hospital until retirement in 1989. Clinical Associate Professor, University of Virginia. President of Virginia Chapter of the American Society of Radiology. In 1973, married Carole (Dunn) Thornhill of Montreal who joined him in Roanoke with her children Joyce and Hugh; first on a 300 acre farm near Boones Mill, Virginia, where he designed and built their house, then later in Roanoke where he retired. Marvin is survived by his beloved wife, Carole and her children, Joyce (Josh Gotbaum) of Georgetown, DC, and Hugh (Laura) of Roanoke; former wife, Elsie, and his six children, Mel (Sandra Matheson) of Powell River, BC, Ellen of Ottawa, Ontario, Donna of Ottawa, Kendall (Jill Austin) of Ottawa, Jill of Lachine, Quebec, Sean (Kathleen Lennon) of Manassas, Virginia; sixteen grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, as well as his brother, Glen of Hillsboro, North Dakota. Predeceased by his parents, his grandparents, Isaac and Mary Ann (Morrison) of Morden, four of his six brothers, (Earl, Mel, Lloyd and Kenny), and sisters-in-law, Eileen (Mel), Lloyd (Roma) Jacqueline Stewart (Kenny) of Oakville, Manitoba. Unselfconscious and self assured, he pioneered public and patient education, and fought tobacco companies about health risks of smoking. Avid camper who trailered his family coast to coast. Loved to captain his home-made pontoon boat. Loved a good story or a practical joke. More than anything a vigorous Sunday dinner debate over science, politics, philosophy or religion would bring that famous glint to his eye. A private Committal Service will be conducted Thursday August 6, 2009 followed by a Memorial Service at St. John’s Episcopal Church Roanoke, Virginia.
