NICHOLSON, Mary Iola

1914 – 2016

Mary Nicholson (nee Gehrke) passed away on December 12, 2016 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 102. She was born on the family farm at Gaetz Valley and received her schooling at Gaetz Valley and Delburne. She worked at the Delburne Creamery for a number of years before moving to Innisfail to work at the creamery there. In Innisfail she met and married Harold Nicholson in 1946. They lived on farms west of Innisfail until moving to Red Deer in 1957. Mary was employed at various retail stores until her retirement.

Mary was predeceased by Harold in 1977, her dad and mother (Bill and Edith Gehrke), sister Marjorie Latam and brothers Reg and Earl as well as sisters-in-law Margaret Gehrke, Zelma Reeser and Kay Nicholson and brothers-in-law Mel Latam, George Nicholson, Bill Nicholson and Clifford Reeser

She is survived by her loving daughter Pat, sister-in-law Thelma Nicholson, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was such a strong and determined lady and as was her wish she lived in her own house until she was recently hospitalized. She will be missed so much.

At Mary’s request, there will not be a funeral service. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, 202, 5913 – 50 Avenue, Red Deer, AB T4N 4C4 or to a charity of one’s choice.
