Mary 1919 - 2009

Mary Murcott of Red Deer, Alberta passed away on November 15, 2009 at the age of 90 years, after a brief illness. Mary was born on July 22, 1919 in Barston, England where she received her education. In her youth, she attended the Barston Village Church, attending three services each Sunday, as her duty was to pump the bellows of the organ for hymns and prayers. In 1940, she married Leonard Scott, Commander with the Royal Navy. Mary joined the Women's Land Army and served from 1941 to 1942. Mary left the Women's Land Army to join Leonard when he was posted in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, where her first son Ian was born. When Leonard returned to sea, Mary went back to England to raise the family in Solihull, where Penny and Fraser were born. Her marriage to Leonard ended in divorce after the war, but Mary capably raised her children, becoming both mother and father, ensuring her children received a good education and start in life. In 1960, Mary married Norman Murcott, emmigrating to Canada in 1974. They spent many happy years together, thoroughly enjoying their work and travels. Mary and Norman made many good friends in Canada, whom they loved and were loved in return. Mary lived her life with dignity and grace and will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and dear friend. Left to mourn Mary's loss are her children; Ian (Corrine) Scott of Kitimat, BC, Penny (Tony) Hill of Warwickshire, England, and Fraser (Joan) Scott of Fishtoft, England. Also left to cherish many warm memories of Mary are her grandchildren; Stephanie Hill of London, England, Graham (Kim Enderby) Scott of Edmonton, AB, Adrian (Kim) Scott of Birmingham, England, and Julian (Priya Sastry) Hill of Newton le Willows, England. She will also be very sadly missed by numerous nieces and nephews, many dear friends and "adopted" grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by her husband Norman in 2000, her parents Frank and Annie Buxcey, brothers Earn and Jessie and her sister Rose. Funeral Services for the late Mary Murcott will be held at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church(18 Selkirk Blvd., Red Deer, AB) on Friday, November 20th, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations made to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church would be greatly appreciated.
