Mary NEWINGTON

May 7, 2005

NEWINGTON Mary L. Newington (nee Bell) born February 17, 1927 in Coronation, Alberta passed away peacefully in her sleep April 14, 2005 at the home of her only daughter, Carol. Mary's nursing career in Duncan started in 1949 in King's Daughters Hospital. She found her niche on the Maternity Ward, witnessing the births of almost every child in the Cowichan Valley. She retired as Head Nurse of the Maternity at the Cowichan District Hospital in 1987, and has remained actively involved with many of her past co- workers. Mary was full of life and always ready to lend a helping hand to her church, St. John the Baptist, Eastern Star, Job's Daughters, The Canadian Cancer Society and in the later years the Cowichan Music Festival. Never stopping for a moment she drove, visited, baked and sewed for all of her friends and causes. Mary's interests and friends were many and varied. She spent her retirement traveling extensively with her dear long time friend, Jean Williams. Mary especially enjoyed her visits with family and friends far and wide. Mary was the beloved mother of Carol Lynn Newington, wonderful and encouraging grandmother to Adam and Morgen Newington and Samara Balfour. She became the mother to Joan Eaton, Don Eaton, Mary and Rob Williams and Dana Balfour, and always a grandmother to Kevin Eaton and Shannon and Brandon Aris. A celebration of Mary's life was held April 20, 2005 at the Christian Reformed Church in Duncan, B.C. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Cowichan Music Festival, C/O Mrs. Robin Irwin, Sec., 11045, Valdon Rd., Ladysmith, B.C.
