MATY Nov. 17, 1928 – Mar. 9, 2008 Mike Maty of Cochrane, AB, formerly of Eckville, AB, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008 at the age of 79 years. Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Mary. He was the very proud father and grandfather to seven children, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Dennis & Diane Planidin, son Nicholas, Dennis' children Dana & Scott, his partner Chantel and their children Alexandra and Django; Bob Planidin, his wife Joanne and their two daughters Kiyomi and Yoshiko; Frances Smith of Burnaby, BC, Phillip Planidin, his wife Karen and their son Jason and wife Jenne and their daughter Ruby; Debra Planidin-Turcios, her husband Edgar and their son Marcos and her son Paul and his wife Colleen; Vicki Andrews and her husband Drew of Golden BC; Pennie Sibbald and her husband Paul and their children Michael and Madison. Mike is also survived by his sister Helen (George) Hazuda of Lethbridge, AB, their children Barb (Charles) LeClair, Laurel (Doug) Scroggie, Patti (Dominic) Santangello and Douglas (Gayle) Hazuda, as well as many much loved great-nieces and nephews. Mike was born in Czechoslovakia and immigrated to Canada in 1933 settling in Southern Alberta. He married Helen Theisen and moved to Eckville, AB. Helen passed away shortly thereafter. In 1976, Mike married Mary Planidin of Calgary and together they lived and worked in the Eckville area until 2005 when they move to Cochrane to be closer to their families. Mike was an active member of several service clubs and a good neighbour and friend to many. He cherished his large family and enjoyed many wonderful years with his grandchildren. He was a man with a big heart and a wonderful sense of humour. Mike will be greatly missed by his many friends and family. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 14, 2008, 1:00 pm at McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Eastside Memorial Chapel, 5388 Memorial Drive NE, Calgary, AB (403) 248-8585. Graveside service will follow at Rocky View Garden of Peace Cemetery.
