Maurice LOUGHEED

June 9, 2005

LOUGHEED Maurice Lougheed of Bowden passed away on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at the Innisfail Hospital at the age of 91 years. Maurice was the last surviving person of the twelve children born to Albert and Mary Lougheed of Bowden, AB. His father came from Ontario in 1898 and took a homestead south-east of Bowden. Two years later his wife Mary, and the first five of their children followed. Maurice was born on that farm and spent all of his 91 years there. He attended Summit School to grade eight, then Bowden School for grades nine and ten. During his grade eleven and twelve he stayed with his brother Norman in Innisfail who was a high school teacher at that time. Maurice always did well in school so Norman encouraged him to attend the Calgary Normal School and become a teacher. Shortly after completing his "practice teaching" Maurice decided that he would rather spend his life working outdoors on the farm. He was interested in raising Hereford cattle instead of the Shorthorns that the family had at that time. In a few years they had some of the finest Herefords in Western Canada. At the farm one of the responsibilities that Maurice assumed was that of maintaining the cattle records required by the Canadian Hereford Association. For sixty years Maurice kept meticulous records. For several decades Maurice, Bill and Dave farmed in partnership each using their own particular talents. Sisters Ada and Louise kept house for them. Maurice was happiest when he was doing the Spring cultivation using the big tractor with a cab. After Dave died in 1977, Maurice and his brother Bill were the greatest of pals as they "held the fort" until Bill's passing in 1996. Maurice was predeceased by his parents and his brothers and sisters; Bert - 1918, Ruby - 1966, Dave - 1977, Lily - 1980, Margaret - 1987, Louise - 1990, Charles - 1991, William - 1996, Norman - 1998, and Ada - 2001. He will be sadly missed by his nephews Bert Lougheed, David Lougheed, Wayne Lougheed and John Kendrick, their wives Kathy, Simonne and Louise, 10 grandnieces and grandnephews and one great grandnephew. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be make to the charity of the donors choice. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 10 at 11:00am at Metcalf Funeral Chapel, 4200 49th Ave, Innisfail.
