March 8, 1936 - November 2, 2021
With sadness we announce the passing of our beloved father, Merv, on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at the age of 85 years. Dad was a kind and sincere man with an inquisitive nature. His extensive work as a Civil Engineer (University of Saskatchewan 1959), and sought- after expertise in roadbuilding, took him around the world, where he made many lifelong friends. Following a career with Saskatchewan Highways as Chief Engineer and Associate Deputy Minister, Mom and Dad headed off on a six-year adventure living and working in Indonesia for ND Lea and Associates. This was one of the highlights of their lives, made even more special when shared with family and friends. They adopted their live-in Indonesian family as their own, even supporting their son through university. Upon returning to Canada, Dad worked as Chief Engineer for the BC Ministry of Highways in Victoria before moving to Red Deer. He completed his career in Alberta, working with EBA Engineering in Edmonton and for the University of Calgary.
Dad enjoyed carpentry (always accompanied with a structural engineering draft blueprint!) and spending time outdoors, much of it on the closest golf course. He was a passionate Kinsmen and Kiwanis member, contributing many hours to community causes. Dad is survived by his daughters Judy (Todd) Brandt and Shannon (Todd) Nivens, and son Trevor (Loralie) Clark, along with grandchildren Meghan (Steve) Garner, Sean (Sarah) Brandt, Natalie (Mike) Reimer, Amanda Clark (Pat), Ben Clark, Kaden Nivens and Ainsley Nivens; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Bernice, brothers-in-law, Garnet Jones and Gord Gibson (Gloria); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Lynn and his parents, Lillian and John. An Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a cause you value. Rest in peace Dad.
