O'HANLON, Michael James

May 8, 1944 to Jan. 14, 2017

Mike was born in Vancouver and grew up in Calgary and Edmonton. While pursuing his B.Comm. at U of A, he met his wife Leslie and many lifelong friends. Mike worked for a short time in the corporate sector then started up multiple small businesses, but soon found his vocation in academia. He returned to U of A to complete his MBA and then launched into his career as a professor of marketing. He taught at U of C, U of A and then became a tenured member of faculty at Red Deer College. During his 31 years at RDC, he made more lifelong friendships, and influenced and enriched the lives of many students. He never called his professorship "work". Travel was an enduring passion for Mike and Leslie and they saw much of the world together. Mike was also a keen sailor and avid golfer, and spent many summer days on the water or on a golf course. Mike lived life very well; his zeal for life, constant quest for knowledge, wonderful sense of humour, unwavering commitment to family and friends, and kind heart will be missed by many. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Leslie of 49 and a half years, son Patrick (Jamie Kish) of Red Deer, daughter Meghan (Chris Snow) of Ottawa, sister Peggy (Don Barrie) of Edmonton, and grandchildren Tyler, Phillip and Hollis. He was predeceased by his parents Art (2010) and Jewel (1997) O'Hanlon. A celebration of Mike's life will be held late spring or early summer; an announcement will follow. Memorial donations can be made to the Red Deer Hospice (reddeerhospice.com)
