MILLAR

MILLAR It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edith Millar. Edith passed away surrounded by her loving family on May 5th, 2009 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre at the age of 90 years. Edith was born on April 4th, 1919 in the Springvale district in Red Deer County; she was the second of seven children born to Carl and Gladys Storey. Edith worked at Eaton's until 1942, when she married John "Jack" Millar. In 1946 Jack and Edith purchased 2 acres in Springvale and together they began to raise their family of five children. Gardens were a necessity, but for Mom it was also a source of pride, she could spot a weed from 300 feet away. Although both weeds and her children continued to grow, Mom returned to work at Eaton's in 1954 while the children were all in school. She joined the Capri Centre in 1963 and worked as a banquet supervisor until 1972. During her years in Springvale Edith joined the Springvale Women's Institute, where she served as president for three terms and had near perfect attendance, missing only one meeting when her son Brian was born. Edith understood the importance of volunteering and strong community involvement. She sat on many boards over the years, including the Council on Aging. In 1970 Jack passed away and Edith sold the acreage and moved into Red Deer in 1976. In 1991 Edith suffered a stroke and decided to move to Piper Creek Lodge in 1992, where she resided until February. Edith is survived by her five children and their spouses; Doreen (Garry) Whaling, Ron (Ann) Millar, Darlene (Tom) Gribbon, Dave (Tracey) Millar and Brian Millar; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She is also remembered by her two sisters, Lucille Coates and Barbara (Harold) Sande; brother, Bob (Nancy) Storey; sisters-in-law, Joyce Storey and Marg Miller. Edith was predeceased by her husband Jack; her brothers, Bill and Harold and her sister Annie Bawtinheimer.
