Norene Hopkins passed away peacefully at the Royal Oak Manor in Lacombe, Alberta, on August 9, 2014 at the age of 85. She was born in High River, Alberta, to Gordon and Beatrice Cameron, on May 19, 1929. She grew up on a farm in Cayley, surrounded by a large extended family, whom she adored. Norene attended Teacher’s College in Calgary, after which she taught in several places in southern Alberta, including Blackie and Black Diamond. She was teaching in Lacombe when she met Trevor Hopkins through their shared love of music. They married in 1952 and raised four children. Norene taught elementary school both full-time and as a substitute teacher in Lacombe while her children were small. She later completed her Royal Conservatory of Music training, and taught music at the Lacombe Elementary School for several years. She also taught piano students in her home, until approximately 10 years ago. Many of Mom’s students went on to have successful musical careers. Norene was very involved in musical endeavors in Lacombe, including accompanying church and community choirs, and singing in musical productions. Children’s choirs and piano students were entered into the Lacombe Kiwanis music competitions. She also volunteered in numerous local organizations. Norene was predeceased by Trevor, her husband of 57 years, her parents, and her brother, Grant Cameron. She leaves to celebrate her life, her 4 children, Debra De Clercq of St. Albert, Gord (Cathy) of Rocky Mountain House, Rhondda (Tony) Jones of Cowichan Bay, B.C. and Pam (Bill) Orchin of Red Deer. Norene and Trevor were blessed with 8 grandchildren and 5 great granddaughters.
