In 1981, the family moved to Red Deer, Alberta. In 1982, while working on a Construction Site, he fell and broke his back and was unable to work again. Onni was very active in his church, was an avid reader, and he had a keen interest in politics.

Onni will lovingly be remembered by his devoted wife of fifty-nine years, Eila; his son, Kari (Donna); his daughter, Kirsi (Kurt); his grandchildren, Sarah (Greg), Maija (Matt), Andy (Breanna), and Matthew; and his great grandchildren, Kenzie, Raelyn, River, Parker and Carson, all of Red Deer, Alberta.

He will also be sadly missed by his brothers, Ensio and Eino; and his sisters, Hilkka, Toini, Vieno, Elvi and Eila, all of Finland; as well as numerous nieces and nephews in Finland.
