Opal PONTO

PONTO ILA OPAL Opal was born to Richard and Rebecca Slemp on October 7, 1913 half a mile east and one mile south of Fleet, Alberta. She passed away on May 5, 2009 at the Galahad Care Centre at the age of 95 years. Those who left to mourn her passing include two daughters, Gwen (Bill) and Linda (Tony); one son, Robert (Lois); eight grandchildren, Les, Leanne (Doug), Allan (Heather); Kelley (Dave), Randy (Yvette), Sabrina (Kelly), Heather (Chris) and Landon; thirteen great-grandchildren, Shanna, Olivia, Emily, Rebecca, Adam, Nicholine (Daniel), Alex, Amanda, Scott, Cody, Sheena, Brett and Eden. Opal was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; one grandson, Larry; her sisters, Osa and Dolly; brothers, Edgar, Tom, Earl, Herman, Leon, Albert, Mac, Don and Percy. Born the eleventh child of Richard and Rebecca Slemp, Opal attended the Camrose Normal School and taught at Painter Creek School for three years. In 1939 she married Arthur Ponto and lived north of Alliance before moving to the farm at Galahad, which Robert operates today. Art and Opal spent five winters in Arizona and traveled to Alaska and Hawaii. Opal was a charter member of St. Paul's Presbyterian Church at Galahad and was active in the choir and W.A. The Service of the celebration of Opal's life was held Saturday, May 9, 2009 at Galahad with Rev. Stephen Haughland officiating. Opal's grandchildren served as pallbearers. Interment followed in the Galahad Cemetery. Opal was very committed to her family and community. She will be sadly missed.
