1933 - 2011

Rex Henry Armitage of Red Deer passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at the age of 77 years. Rex was born in Piapot, Saskatchewan on October 5, 1933. In 1939, the Armitage family moved to farm in the Shady Nook District west of Red Deer. After attending Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School, Rex farmed with his family, adopting many agricultural innovations over the years. On June 9, 1962, Rex married the love of his life, Joanne Stelmack and together they raised their family of nine children. In 1999, Rex and Joanne were recognized as Red Deer's Farm Family of the Year. Rex enjoyed many roles; the camaraderie of the Red Deer Farmer's Bonspiel, watching his children get pulled around by their 4 - H calves, taking the train across Canada for Grey Cup games and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. His love of life and infectious sense of humour will be greatly missed. Rex is survived by son Darryl (Maryann); seven daughters Sheilagh (Doug) Marks, Maureen (Shane) Matthews, Karen Armitage, Elaine (Pat) Manor, Lorna (Dale) Szalacsi, Dianna Armitage and Linda (Travis) Manchester. Also to cherish Rex's memory are his 15 grandchildren; brother John (Marney) Armitage, sister Breda (Bill) Strong and daughter-in-law Shirley Armitage. He was predeceased by his wife Joanne, son William Armitage, his parents Martin and Bertha Armitage and his brother Glen. Prayers for Rex Armitage will be held at Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 - 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass for Rex and Joanne Armitage will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5508 - 48A Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the STARS Foundation, 1441 - Aviation Park NE, Box 570, Calgary, Alberta, T2E 8M7.
