Richard "Dick"

Aug. 22, 1929 - May 15, 2014

Dick passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Hospice. He was born and raised in Calgary, the sixth in a family of eight. He began his 36 year career with Alberta Government Telephones in 1950, working out of town most of the time. He married Evelyn Marlin in 1952, and when they started raising their family he decided to move to Red Deer in 1960, to work close to home. He leaves to mourn, his devoted wife, Ev; children Dave (Debbie), Diane (Dennis) Blades; and he was the much loved "Poppa" to his grandchildren, Brendan (Dana), Derek (Katrine) and Brett; also Darlene and Dustin Blades. They welcomed their first great-granddaughter, Ava, last year. He is also survived by siblings, Collin Bishop of Kamloops, Florence Deausy of St. Albert, Vi Dean of Red Deer, and Bob (Joyce) Waters of Didsbury; as well as many in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Bill and Gertrude Waters and three brothers, Les, Wilf and Cliff. He was an avid craftsman, and after his retirement in 1986 he built a family room addition to their home with a workshop below where he loved to spend time working on some project or repairing something - he was a real "Mr. Fix it". For the last 35 years, he enjoyed as much time as possible, camping with family and friends at their RV acreage west of Innisfail (in Silver Lagoon). Donations in Dick's memory may be made to the Parkinson's Society, 5406 - 43 Street, Red Deer, T4N 1C9, or the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Avenue, Red Deer, T4R 3S6. Memorial services will be held at Gaetz Memorial United Church on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Eventide Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
