In Loving memory of Roger Fred McGonigal ~ Roger was born March 19th, 1949 to August 9th, 2021, first son to Eldon and Dorothy (Dye) McGonigal.
He grew up on the farm with his two sisters Linda and Shona, and his brother Robert, where many good memories were made farming and working with cattle, pigs, and chickens.
Roger spent his adolescent years on the family farm, south of Alix, helping with chores and his farm duties. He was part of the local 4-H club raising livestock and enjoying the farm life.
After graduating high school, he lived with his sister Linda in Edmonton. During this time, he was working for the CN railroad. This job took him all over western Canada riding the rails. He spent time fighting fires in BC, he always said he spent more time running from the fires than fighting them.
In April of 1971, Roger married Margaret Joan Sim, where they lived in Alix and Edmonton for a short while. They moved to Red Deer in 1974. Roger and Joan were blessed with 4 children Charlene, Trevor, Darren, Angela.
Roger started working for Shaw cable in 1985, he spent the next 33 years working at Shaw attending many of the corporate parties and get together' s. He enjoyed working at Shaw, meeting new people, and learning new skills.
Roger spent his time in Red Deer raising his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. He enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends bowling, playing baseball, playing cards, darts, golfing, dancing, curling, camping, fishing, crosswords, one week in Fairmont for 40yrs, help building decks/fences, scorekeeping for hockey tournaments, going to hockey and football games.
He recently found a passion for disc golf; Roger was never afraid to try something new and would always lend a helping hand.
Roger is survived by his children Trevor, Darren (Tracy), and Angie (Trevor), grandchildren Denay, Mitchell, Alyssa, Taylor and Kiara, and great grandson Jayce. Roger was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Joan, parents, Eldon and Dorothy, a daughter Charlene, his sister Linda, and brother Robert.
A celebration of Roger's life will take place at 11:30 am on Friday Aug. 20th, at Quality Inn, 7150 50th Ave, Red Deer AB.
