May 7, 2009

HILL Roger William March 17, 1947 - April 5, 2009 On April 5, 2009, our beloved husband, father, brother and friend, Roger William Hill, passed away at the age of 62. Roger was born March 17, 1947 in Dorchester England to Dorothy and William Hill. As a child Roger and his family lived in the country, first in England, then later immigrating to Canada in 1955. As a young boy Roger loved playing conkers with his brother Barry and riding his tricycle. Roger graduated from the University of Alberta as a Professional Mechanical Engineer. Following graduation he worked in the engineering profession in both Alberta and Manitoba. Taking a break from engineering, Roger built a waterbed manufacturing plant in Edmonton and ran the plant's outlet store for several years. Roger returned to engineering when he moved to Kamloops and established the Thompson-Nicola Engineering Company in 1982. It was in Kamloops that he met wife Lorraine. He later worked as a Professional Engineer in Toronto, and finally in Calgary. Roger was well respected by his colleagues in the Engineering Profession, both in the office environment and in the field working with the construction trades. The family is grateful for the support from these colleagues at this time. Roger loved road trips, being a chameleon, good blues music, skiing, fishing, shots of tequila and being a mentor. He was loved by his wife Lorraine, his Dad Bill, his son Stuart (and wife Lela), his daughter Joan (and husband Brian Eremko) and his son Gordon (and partner Kim). He enjoyed the company of his grandchildren Scott, Taylor, Curtis, Daine and Austin. Roger is also survived by his brothers Barry (Colleen), David (Brandy), Andy and his sister Suzette Parker. Roger is also missed by his many nieces and nephews. The family would especially like to thank Nicki and Rocky for their constant support. We would also like to acknowledge with love, Carla and Julie of the Home Care Team and the nurses and Doctors of Unit 47. There are many friends who loved Roger, we can’t list you all, but we know you loved Roger and he loved you, and we thank you for your support. A remembrance celebration will be held at the family home at 40 Sunlake Road SE in Calgary, AB on Sunday, April 19th at 3:00 pm. All who loved Roger are welcome to attend. Roger died from mesothelioma, a form of lung cancer resulting from exposure to asbestos in the workplace. Asbestos continues to be mined in Canada and is now exported to developing countries.
