Aug. 20, 2014 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ruth Milman, beloved wife of Arnold Milman of Calgary, on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at the age of 92 years. Ruth was born January 11, 1922 in Harbonas, Sweden to Johan and Maria Katerina (Karin) Gilberg. The Gilberg family immigrated to Canada in 1924 and farmed in the Irricana area. In January 1944, Ruth joined the Canadian Women's Army Corp, trained in Vermillion and Edmonton and was stationed in Ottawa and Calgary, where she became a Sergeant while in service. After the war ended, she worked for Calgary Power until 1956, the year she married her loving husband J. Arnold Milman. Ruth and Arnold were proud parents to Gordon and Karin. Ruth was a great athlete; she played baseball (short stop), basketball, golf, yoga, badminton, bowling, tai chi, hiking, cross-country skiing, and mountain climbing. She was an active member of the Irricana Church of the Brethern, Gaetz United Church in Red Deer, St. David's United Church in Calgary, and KIK Seniors in Irricana. She also volunteered with the Women's Auxiliary at the Foothills Medical Centre for many years. Ruth loved her family and friends and enjoyed the laughter and fellowship and the good times they had together. She especially enjoyed many happy moments at Pine Lake where everyone was always welcome. Ruth was kind, loving, patient, and thoughtful, always willing to pitch-in and help out anywhere she could. She is cherished by all who knew her and will be greatly missed. Ruth is survived by her loving husband of fifty-eight years, Arnold Milman; daughter Karin Milman; daughter-in-law BJ (Rob) Fritz; grandchildren, Christopher (Vanessa) Ropchan, Jennifer (Jonathon) Exner, Daniel and Kimberly Milman; and great-grandchildren, Maia Rophchan, Samantha and Denna Exner. Ruth is also survived by her brother Rolf Gilberg; sisters-in-law, Gladys and Dorothy Milman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by her beloved son Dr. Gordon Milman; parents John and Karin Gilberg; sisters, Anne Dunn and Elsie Sullivan; brother Rooney Gilberg; brothers-in-law, Tom Dunn, Dave Sullivan, Dean, Bob and Lionel Milman; sisters-in-law, Vera and Maxine Gilberg and Florence Milman.
