It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sandra Jean Weidner on December 31, 2009 at the age of 68 years. Sandra passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family, after complications from a heart transplant. Sandra was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by her husband Dave; 4 children and 4 grandchildren. Andrea (Rick Staples) Marshall & Ashley, Darren (Lorrie-Anne) Nathan & Brianne Weidner, Blayne (Karen) Weidner, and Carla Weidner. She is also survived by one brother, Allen (Chor-Hing) Hembree. She was predeceased by her parents Earl and Millie Hembree and her brother Patrick Hembree. Sandra was born July 29, 1941 in Claresholm. She graduated from Stavely high school in 1959. She then attended University of Alberta in Calgary, and started teaching in Bentley in 1961. Sandra had high standards and was a great organizer. She was deeply devoted to her community serving in executive positions in Kinettes, I.O.D.E., Order of the Royal Purple, Figure Skating Association, CGIT and the United Church. She entered politics in 1980, serving in numerous leadership capacities over a 20-year span, including: serving as school trustee for Lacombe County and Wolf Creek school boards, 14 as Chairman; president of the Alberta Library Trustees Association; president of the Alberta School Boards Association; Director of the Jubilee Insurance Board and the Alberta School Employees Benefit Plan; Chairman of the Local Authorities Pension Plan board; Member and Chairman of the Red Deer College Board of Governors. Sandra was awarded a lifetime membership in the ASTA, the ALTA, and an honorary lifetime membership in the Canadian Association of School superintendents. She was also awarded the Alberta Centennial Award, the Calgary White-hatter Award, Alberta Achievement Award, and she is a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Sandra was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Natural leader and delegator, Sandra knew how to be a straight shooter yet was diplomatic in telling it like it was. For the last ten years Sandra was able to enjoy her time at home. She enjoyed playing weekly bridge games with friends, having her grandchildren visit and planning her days around her constant companions, Bailey and Tripper. Sandra and Dave were able to travel extensively and enjoyed a life full of love, family and friendship. Funeral Services will be held from St. Andrew’s United Church, 5226-51 Ave., Lacombe, AB. on Friday, January 8, 2010 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Sandra’s name may be made to the Mazankowski Heart Institute, University of Alberta Hospital, 8440-112 Street, Edmonton, Alberta, T6G 2B7.
