Shirley was born in Innisfail to parents Viggo and Elaine Petersen. She attended school in Torrington and Wimborne. After obtaining her teacher's certificate, Shirley returned to teach in Innisfail and did so until her retirement. Shirley loved teaching elementary school, especially the art classes. After retirement, Shirley volunteered for the Innisfail Christmas Bureau, delivered Meals-On-Wheels and worked
at the Innisfail Historical Village. Following in her father's footsteps, she was a faithful curler. Shirley will be greatly missed by her cousins, Norma Schmidt, June Miller, Dale (Bobbie) Beckman, Bill (Glady) Miller, Pat (Peter) Wyllie, Judy Satterlund, Carol Kosman, Grant (Brenda) Nolan, Carmen (Ernie) Ewasiuk, Michael (Rita) Miller, Elaine Vale, Kerry (Lanell) Nolan and Dan Nolan. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Mark's Anglican Church Hall, 49 Avenue and 52 Street, Innisfail, Alberta. Burial of Shirley's urn will take place at a private family gathering. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Shirley's honour may be made directly to the Innisfail & District Historical Village, Meals-On-Wheels or a charity of the donor's choice.
