Shirley Ryan, 93 passed away peacefully with her family at her side on January 15, 2017. She was born May 24, 1923 on the Gessleman family farm near Alix, Alberta where she attended school and raised her family. Shirley was married to the love of her life, Fredrick Van Alstyne and they settled in the area to farm. Her life was filled with family and friends with which she shared her passion for horses, gardening, and travel. She unselfishly gave to the many who passed through her life, sharing her love, friendship and wisdom. Rarely did you show up at Shirley’s and not enjoy a homemade cookie or piece of chocolate cake. She loved to play Scrabble and in her later years while residing in Red Deer she enjoyed tea parties and working jigsaw puzzles.
Shirley will be deeply missed by her children Judy (Art), Jim (Laura), Elaine (Mike), Rick, stepson Ormond and her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grand-children. Her amazing strength will live on for generations in the many lives she has so deeply enriched.
The family welcomes you to join us in celebrating Shirley’s fulfilled life on May 28th from 2:00 – 5:00 PM at the Golden Circle, 4620- 47A Ave., Red Deer Ab.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Red Deer Hospital Moose Cottage.
