SYBOM, 1925 - 2007 Mr. Joseph 'Joe' Sybom, beloved husband of Mrs. Nelly Sybom of Red Deer, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 12, 2007 at the age of 81 years. Joe was born on January 18, 1925 at Emmen, Netherlands and raised in nearby Raalte. He was a Veteran of the Dutch Army and served in Indonesia. In 1953, he married Nelly and they immigrated to Canada settling in Edson, Alberta where he had a job as an auto mechanic waiting for him. After a few years, he moved his young family to Red Deer and lived the rest of his life in Central Alberta. He worked at various garages, for awhile owning his own repair shop until eventually he took a position at MacFarlane Goodacre Motors as shop foreman. He stayed with this company for twenty-seven years until his retirement. Joe was a dedicated family man and had many passions throughout his life. He loved gardening and spent much time in his greenhouse growing heirloom tomatoes and saving seed. He was a creative man constantly building things from metalworking projects in his beloved shop to hobby electronics and constructing the family home from the ground up, largely by himself. He was an avid reader and had a thirst for knowledge, always researching and teaching himself new things. Joe leaves to mourn his loss, his loving wife of fifty-four years, Nelly of Red Deer, his children, Joseph (Katya) Sybom of Calgary, Alberta, Wilma (Neil) Steinke of Kamloops, British Columbia, Stephen Sybom of Red Deer and Susan (Pete) Allison of Smithers, British Columbia and ten grandchildren. He will also be sadly missed by his sisters and brothers, Lidy of Edmonton and Henny, Annie and Arie, all of the Netherlands. Joe was predeceased by his brothers, Bertus and Henk and a sister, Sien. Prayers will be held at Eventide Funeral Chapel, 4820 - 45th Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. A Public Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 6 McMillan Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta on Thursday, January 18, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation entrusted to the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer, Alberta. If desired, in place of flowers, Memorial Donations in Joe's honour may be made directly to the Alzheimer's Society, Suite 101, 4805 - 48th Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 3T2.
