Verna passed away peacefully in her 100th year in Calgary with her family at her side. She was pre-deceased by husband Charles Bill; her sister Marie Fleming; her brother Philisk (Bud) Lund; and her great grandson Spencer Lautermilch. Verna is survived and will be missed by her children, Barbara Kolafa (Jack), Beverly Potter (Ken), Susan Smith (Don), Bonnie Bill (Cliff), and Robert Bill (Lorri); 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Verna, a prairie girl at heart, was born in Red Deer. She spent many years in Vernon, BC, moving back to Alberta in her later years to be closer to her family. Verna will always be remembered for her great love of the outdoors, passion for gardening, expert sewing and for providing us with fresh produce and delicious baked goods - yum banana cream pie! Her inventive ability to "rig something up" and her "waste not want not" philosophy made Verna a pioneer of the environmental movement.
A private Memorial for family will be held in Calgary. Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Verna's family through www.evanjstrong.com. If friends so desire, gifts can be made to the Girl Guides (https://www.girlguides.ca/web/) or to the Red Cross (https://www.redcross.ca/) where Verna volunteered for many years. Arrangements in care of Evan J. Strong Funeral Services. (403) 265-1199.
