William KENNEDY

April 4, 2008

KENNEDY William Roderick Born September 10, 1928, William (Bill) Kennedy peacefully left this world in the early hours of March 29, 2008 to join his beloved parents Alice and Roderick and his infant daughter Barbara Lee. Bill was a devoted, loving husband to his best friend and wife of 57 years, Edna. He will be missed dearly by his sisters, Zelda Steer and Barbara Thompson, and his six adoring children and their partners: Ted, Laurel & Bert, Rod & Jan, Dianne & Joe, Bill & Cynthia and Patrick & Edda. Bill was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, all of whom kept the light in his eyes. He was a compassionate, loving and spiritual man, whose wife and family meant the world to him. Bill was born and raised in Lethbridge, Alberta. "Dee" spoke often of the memories and friendships from that special time in his life and they always brought a laugh or a smile to us all. He held those friends and memories close to his heart to his very last days. Bill spent over fifty years in the newspaper business. With his father away in the Canadian Army, Bill left school in 1942 at age 14 to work as an apprentice compositor for the Lethbridge Herald. In 1961 he moved his young family to Red Deer, Alberta where he was the foreman of the Composing Room at the Red Deer Advocate. In 1972, he moved to beautiful Victoria, BC, after falling in love with the city on a visit years earlier. In Victoria, Bill was a valued asset at the Times Colonist until his retirement in 1994. Bill was an intelligent and interesting man, who possessed sharp wit and a wry sense of humour. He was an avid golfer and lifelong lover of sports. He was a loyal friend to many, but above all, he was the most loving husband, father and grandfather anyone could ever wish for. It is difficult to encapsulate this man in words, but to those fortunate to have known him, he will leave a lasting impression in their hearts and thoughts. A celebration of Bill's life will take place on Saturday April 5th, 2008 at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 785 Burnside Road West, Father William Hann officiating. Prayers will be held at 7PM Friday at Sands of Colwood Funeral Chapel, 2050 Sooke Road. Such courage… Such strength … from such a gentle soul Bill and the Kennedy family wish to thank the staff of 401S of VGH for their care in his final days. The family encourage a donation to the Cancer Society or St. Vincent de Paul in lieu of flowers.
