Letter: MLAs expected to toe the party line

I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with my MLA Jason Stephan.

As MLA for Red Deer South, Stephan seems to have an agenda that he never expressed when running for the position. For some reason, and I believe it’s ignorance of the parliamentary system, he seems to think he is free to publicly express his personal views, instead of the party he represents.

He showed his contempt for the people of Alberta when he flaunted the travel restrictions adopted by the government at Christmas, and now he is a part of a group of dissonant UCP MLAs that don’t have any respect for party unity.

Of course, an elected official has their own personal views and beliefs, but when it comes to party policy, they are expected to “toe the line.”

I sent an email to the MLA last week expressing my views, but I guess he must be busy, as I didn’t even get an acknowledgment that he received it, never mind a reply.

As I explained in my email to him, actions like these feed right into the hands of the opposition. I have no doubt they will use it to their advantage.
