I am writing this letter in response to the July 20 headline in the Advocate Rebel proud of friend for coming out as gay.

Of course Joel Sexsmith can be friends with whoever he chooses and be proud of whoever he wants to be.

Personally though, I would be proud to announce my friendship with someone who has accomplished something worthwhile in society. I would be proud to acknowledge my relationship with someone who won a Nobel prize, who made a life saving medical discovery, who won an Olympic Gold medal etc.

In my opinion, being homosexual hardly qualifies as some sort of accomplishment.

So why choose this article as a front page story? Perhaps, some other topic might have been more appropriate. Or announcing friendship with a star athlete might be better.
