Letter: Should Red Deer change its name?

Another budget, another shameful treatment of Alberta’s third largest metropolitan region. Once again we are being subjected to our government ignoring critical needs in our area. We are 20 years late in getting a justice centre and, with this budget, we may well be 20 years late in getting critically needed hospital services.

Another budget, another shameful treatment of Alberta’s third largest metropolitan region. Once again we are being subjected to our government ignoring critical needs in our area. We are 20 years late in getting a justice centre and, with this budget, we may well be 20 years late in getting critically needed hospital services.

Maybe what we need to do is to lower our expectations to the level our current government wants them to be. We could rename our community “Bypass, Alberta.” It’s an apt name because we spent more than $100 million to make it easier for traffic to bypass our community, we are being bypassed in obtaining a university, and we are being bypassed in having our medical services brought up to date and expanded to meet the needs of our area.

Maybe, if the government puts our community needs on the back burner for a few more years, we could rename our community “Backwater, Alberta.”

Our elected officials, both municipal and provincial have been unsuccessful in seeing Red Deer treated fairly; they need our help as citizens. Let’s each get off our duff and make it known to the premier and cabinet members that we are not satisfied with service that is significantly inferior to other municipalities in Alberta. They are not hearing our needs – we need to talk/write louder.
