Letter to the editor: City should be more choosy when it comes to public art

As a reasonably new Red Deerian (five months), I cannot help but wonder who is responsible for the production and placement of some of the art pieces that have been displayed around the city.

Most of these are very tasteful and provide explanations as to what or who they represent, and the city is and should be very proud of these.

There are, however, several art pieces (so called) that are not very pleasing to the eye, as well as having no description of what they are supposed to represent.

The first piece I am speaking of is located at 50th Avenue (Little Gaetz) and 52nd Street, presently across the street from the burned-out building. It sort of looks like a Porta Potty or a slot machine.

The second piece is located on the north side of 32nd Street and Taylor Drive.

Both of these pieces look like they came out of a scrap pile (or not very far away from one), and in my mind, fall very far below the remainder of Red Deer art pieces.

I am not aware of what the budget is for street art, but these seem to be in a different class.

I am just putting forward the idea that the City of Red Deer, leaders and public, should check out the Kinetic Wind Sculptures by Anthony Howe website.

If one of these pieces was placed in the middle of City Hall Park, I know that people would travel from far and wide to watch and mesmerize themselves.

Please put this letter in the paper and let public opinion speak out on the purchase of any new art to be purchased with our tax dollars.
