Hello my dear Red Deerians! As your Mayor, it brings me immense joy and pride to witness the vibrant community spirit that thrives within our city. Over the past few weeks, I have had the privilege of participating in numerous events that highlight the remarkable journey of our youth and the community's unwavering support for their growth and well-being. From Big Brothers and Big Sisters, an incredible community event at the Bower Community Association to the grand opening of the Sheldon Kennedy Centre, it is evident that Red Deer is a city that values sports, mental health, and inclusivity and critical investment in our youth.
Our city's sports scene is thriving, and recently I had the opportunity to speak with Red Deer Minor Baseball on how the sport is flourishing in our community. The growth of this, and many other unique sport opportunities popping up in Red Deer, is a testament to the hard work and commitment of the players, coaches, and supporters. It also reflects the broader growth of sports in Red Deer, as more and more young people are getting involved in various athletic pursuits.
In today's digital age, sports play a crucial role in promoting mental health and providing a positive outlet for our youth. Physical activity helps reduce stress, improve mood, and build resilience. Additionally, sports offer a healthy alternative to the often-overwhelming influence of social media. By participating in sports, our young citizens can develop real-world connections and learn valuable life skills that will serve them well in the future.
Ensuring that all children and youth have access to these opportunities is a priority for our city. Through generous sponsorships and the Fee Assistance Program, we can ensure sports and recreational activities accessible to families who might otherwise face financial barriers. These initiatives ensure that every child, regardless of their economic background, can benefit from the physical, social, and emotional advantages of being active and involved.
One of the highlights I know many of our youth and parents look forward to is the Rip ‘n Rec program. The Rip ‘n Rec Summer Pass allows children and youth aged 17 years and under admission to all City recreation facilities and the ride to get there – for only $50! This summer special will transport your child to fun and not only keep our young citizens active but also foster a sense of community and belonging. Watch for those to become available in early June.
At the heart of our community's success is the spirit of volunteerism. Our programs and events are made possible by the countless hours contributed by dedicated volunteers. Whether it's coaching a youth sports team, organizing a bottle drive to support local initiatives, or lending a hand at community events, volunteers are the backbone of our city. Their selfless contributions help create a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
Bottle drives and other fundraisers are essential for supporting our local teams and programs. These efforts not only provide necessary funds but also foster a sense of teamwork and community involvement. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents, volunteers, and community members who participate in these initiatives. And the next time they show up at your door, keep in mind what a bag of bottles, or the purchase of a chocolate bar can mean to these teams and these children. You really can make a difference, so donate and encourage them at your door.
Red Deer is brimming with opportunities for youth to explore their interests, develop new skills, and build lasting friendships. Whether it's through sports, arts, or community service, there are countless ways for young people to get involved and make a positive impact. I encourage all families to explore the many programs and activities available in our city and to support their children in pursuing their passions.
Reflecting on the past few weeks, I am struck by the enthusiasm and dedication of our young citizens. From participating in sports tournaments to engaging in community service projects, our youth are actively embracing their journey in life. I am inspired by their energy and commitment, and I am grateful for the support of parents, volunteers, teams, and fundraisers who help make these opportunities possible.
Programs like Grow Kids Day, recently held at the Collicutt Centre and G.H. Dawe Community Centre for Grade 5 students citywide, play a vital role in nurturing future leaders. These initiatives provide mentorship, guidance, and support to help young people develop confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of purpose. By investing in our youth today, we are building a stronger, more resilient community for tomorrow.
The recent grand opening of the Sheldon Kennedy Centre of Excellence marks a significant milestone for our community. This facility is dedicated to bringing strategic mental health care, client advocacy and support, and addictions counselling partners together to more effectively serve clients ranging from children to adults. The Centre's mission aligns with our City's commitment to providing comprehensive support for our youth, ensuring they have the resources and care they need to thrive.
As we look to the future, I want to extend a sincere shout-out to everyone who contributes to the growth and well-being of our youth. From parents and volunteers to teams and fundraisers, your efforts are making a deep impact. Together, we are creating a community where every child has the opportunity to pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.
In conclusion, Red Deer is a city that values the power of sports, community, and inclusivity. By supporting our youth through various programs and initiatives, we are fostering a brighter, healthier future for all. Thank you for your unwavering dedication and commitment to making Red Deer a place where everyone can thrive.
