Re: “Climate is changing, but don’t blame humans for it,” Letter, June 6.

This letter recycles the old nonsense about 20,000 scientists signing a statement saying that climate change is not caused by humans.

However, a quick internet search for the petition (called the Oregon Petition) reveals that the people listed on the petition have neither their titles, nor their affiliations listed (so there is no way to check authenticity regarding their scientific backgrounds).

On top of that, pranksters found it to be quite easy to successfully get fake names listed on the petition, such as characters from the TV show M*A*S*H, the movie Star Wars, and the name of one of the members of the Spice Girls.

So, is it too much to ask that people with wild assertions check those assertions before putting pen to paper?
