2020 eighth-round draft pick signs with Rebels

The Red Deer Rebels have announced on Thursday their eighth round selection in the 2020 Western Hockey League (WHL) Prospects Draft, Carson Birnie has signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

The 2005-born forward from Arcola, Sask. was picked by Red Deer 160th overall two years ago.

“Carson has continued to make positive strides in his development since being a late-round pick and we like the mind set he possesses as a player to continue trending that way,” said Rebels Associate General Manager Shaun Sutter in a media release. “We believe his size, compete and skill set will allow him to be an effective two-way player in the WHL.”

During the 2019-20 season the six-foot 164-pound player played in 29 games where he contributed 67 points with the Regina Monarchs U15 AA before being draftedby the Rebels. Most recently in the 2021-22 season in 43 games with the Estevan Bears U18 AAA he fired in 35 points and 68 penalty minutes.
