Despite rainy conditions on Thursday, the 2023 McLennan Ross Alberta Junior Tour Championship reached its conclusion in Red Deer.
The one-day championship at Riverbend Golf and Recreation Area was the final stop of 24 events held by the tour this summer.
The tournament featured 98 golfers from across the province with only a few coming out on top.
Calgary’s Sela Ogada, 14, won the girl’s overall division after a two-hole playoff victory over Camrose’s Nicole Rohr. Both shot five over par 77s but Ogada sunk a birdie putt on the second playoff hole to become tour champion.
Ogada told Alberta Golf following her win that it felt great to win this year.
“I did everything I could and I’m just glad [my putt] dropped,” she said. “[This win] ranks pretty close to the top because this is probably one of the biggest events I’ve won.”
The junior boy’s overall tour champion was awarded to Banff Springs’ Charles Greaves who shot an even-par 72. He finished just one stroke ahead of Spruce Grove’s Kade Trefanenko and Calgary’s Zaiden Dennis.
“It feels great. It was nice to end my season on a good note,” Greaves said. “I won a few McLennan Ross club championships and I’d say this is my biggest win this year.”
Red Deer’s Bennett Love, 12, had a fantastic round shooting a five-under-par 67. However, he did not qualify to win the tour championship because he was required to shoot from the yellow tees with the rest of the U13 athletes.
Love was named the U13 boy’s low gross champion by 13 strokes after knocking in five birdies and even an eagle through 18 holes.
