A last-minute goal and an overtime tally lifted the Red Deer Rebels to a big win over the Oil Kings in Edmonton.

Jhett Larson scored the overtime winner, as the Rebels topped the Central Division-leading Oil Kings 5-4 at Rogers Place this past Sunday.

Trailing by one goal, Red Deer Rebels star and Western Hockey League points leader Arshdeep Bains scored with just 10 second left on the clock to push the game into overtime.

With Bains’ goal and two assists on Sunday, he climbed over the 100-point plateau for the first time in his WHL career. He now sits at 101 points, five more than the closest player – teammate Ben King.

Talon Brigley and Liam Keeler got Red Deer on the board in the first period. Edmonton’s Jakub Demek brought his team within one before the period’s end.

Justin Sourdif and Cole Miller scored in the second period to take the lead for the Oil Kings, but King scored his 48th of the season to tie the game up at 18:23 of the middle frame.

With just two minutes remaining Jaxsen Wiebe put the Oil Kings ahead.

Rebels goaltender Connor Unger stopped 35 of 39 shots, while Edmonton’s Kolby Hay stopped 28 of 33.

The three stars of the game were Jhett Larson (1), Arshdeep Bains (2) and Justin Sourdif (3).
