British Columbia beats Alberta at WHL Cup in Red Deer

British Columbia 5 Alberta 4 (OT)

Team Alberta was beaten in its final round robin game at the WHL Cup Friday.

British Columbia defeated Alberta 5-4 in overtime at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer.

Thanks to two goals from Hiroki Gojsic, and additional markers from Miguel Marques and Tij Iginla, British Columbia led 4-1 after two periods. Brock Souch had Alberta’s lone goal in the first period.

But Alberta sent the game into overtime after a big third period. Zane Saab scored two power play goals and Keith McInnis added another with the man advantage to tie the game at four.

Oliver Josephson won the game for British Columbia with an overtime goal.

B.C. goaltender Jesse Sanche stopped 24 of 28 shots for B.C. in the win and Alberta’s Francis Christian stopped 31 of 36.

Team Alberta was coming off of a 5-4 overtime victory against Team Saskatchewan Thursday night.

Saskatchewan opened the game with four straight goals from Dawson Gerwing, Cole Pearson and two from Ashton Tait. Alberta then fired back with five unanswered goals from Souch, Gavin Garland, McInnis, Saab and Marek Howell.

Christian stopped 17 of 21 shots for Alberta and Saskatchewan goalie Luke Brunen stopped 26 or 31.

Alberta is now 2-1 and British Columbia is 3-0. Saskatchewan and Manitoba will face off later Friday to determine the final standings of round robin play.

Tournament play begins Saturday and conclude Sunday at the Peavey Mart Centrium.
