Canada captures three medals

Canadians Genevieve Tougas, Crystal Lee and Travis Gerrits all captured medals Monday at a NorAm freestyle skiing competition.

PARK CITY, Utah — Canadians Genevieve Tougas, Crystal Lee and Travis Gerrits all captured medals Monday at a NorAm freestyle skiing competition.

Tougas, of St. Hubert, Que., was second in the women’s aerials event with 153.54 points while Lee, of Queensville, Ont., was third with 128.72. American Ashley Caldwell was first with 165.23 points.

On Sunday, Tougas and Lee finished 1-2, respectively. Despite finishing third, Tougas, 22, still scored eight points more than she did Sunday.

“I had a better performance today (Monday),” said Tougas.

“The field jumped much better and I increased my level of difficulty on my final jump and was able to get into second place.

“I was pleased with that. It gives me a lot of confidence for the World Cups in January.”

Laurence Allard-Riendeau of Montreal was fifth.

American Nevin Brown won the men’s event with 183.64 points. Gerrits, of Milton, Ont., rebounded from a seventh-place finish Sunday to take the silver medal with 162.14 points.

Michael Rossi of the U.S., finished third with 159.27 points while Jonathan Vellner of Red Deer, was fourth with 157.32.

Gerrits, 18, finished second despite battling a stomach injury suffered in training.

“I’m still sore but I came back pretty strong,” said Gerrits, 18. “It’s always a mental challenge to come back from a fall like that.

“But I had planned anyway to decrease the difficulty of my jumps for the NorAms just to work on landings and perfecting the simple stuff.”

Samuel Belanger-Dallaire of Lac-Beauport, Que., was 10th while Marc-Antoine Labbe-Giguere of Beauport, Que., was 17th.
