Canada qualifies for worlds

Former Red Deer College Kings player Gavin Schmitt contributed 12 points as the Canadian men’s volleyball team swept host Mexico 3-0 on Sunday in a 2010 world championship qualifying tournament in Guadelajara.

The Canadian squad, which prevailed 25-15, 25-18, 25-17, qualified for the worlds with a 3-0 record while 2-1 Mexico earned the other berth from the NORCECA tournament. The Canadian team also features two other former RDC players — Dallas Soonias of Red Deer and Brock Davidiuk of Edmonton.

Meanwhile, the Canadian women’s team qualified for worlds by beating host Mexico 3-2 at Tijuana.

Red Deer’s Julie Young is a member of the Canadian women’s national team, which downed Mexico 25-13, 25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 15-8 and finished the NORCECA qualifier at 3-0.
