Canada’s top youth speed skaters set to race in Red Deer

Canadian Youth Speed Skating Championships start Saturday at 9 a.m.

Setters Place will once again be in the national spotlight this weekend.

After hosting some of Canada’s best young long track speed skaters almost a year ago at the Canada Winter Games, Red Deer will once again be the backdrop for a major competition.

Starting Saturday, the Red Deer Central Lions Speed Skating Club and Speed Skating Canada will host 150 of the best young skaters from the ages of 11-15 at the two-day Canadian Youth Long Track Championships at Setters Place.

Two local competitors will represent Alberta at the event, with Red Deer’s Charlotte Murphy in the Female Train 2 Train 12 age class and James Wigelsworth in the Male T2T 12. Overall, Alberta has 37 athletes racing over the two days.

Racing begins both Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m.

The opening ceremonies are Friday at 7 p.m. at the Baymont Hotel.
