Week two of the Central Alberta High School Football League wrapped up on Friday night with the Notre Dame Cougars, Hunting Hills Lightning, and Lacombe Rams all earning victories.
Following the Lightning's 18-13 victory over the H.J. Cody Lakers at Setters Place, the Notre Dame Cougars blew out the Lindsay Thurber Raiders 43-6 later that evening.
For the Cougars, Thomas Barrett led the way with 168 rushing yards on 15 carries and Cayden Cormier was close behind with 103 yards on eight carries.
On the receiving end, Ben McAuley made one catch for 46 yards and a touchdown. Scott Vandermost also had 12 yards receiving and Habtanu Thain Liptak had 14 yards. Quarterback Thain Liptak had two completions on seven attempts and backup Lex Porfoun had one completion on two attempts.
For the Raiders, Xnox Kushniruk led the team with 129 rushing yards on six carries and Damien Bertram had 56 receiving yards. The Raiders quarterback Andrew Hyett threw for 60 yards on two completions with over 10 pass attempts.
During that same time, the Lacombe Rams beat the Stettler Wildcats 35-21 in front of their home fans in Lacombe.
The Rams did more of their damage through the air with 231 yards passing, including 229 yards from quarterback Joe Lamoureux. Their running game struggled with only 16 yards rushing on 14 carries.
This led to big games from their receivers including Lincoln Dmetriuk who had 126 yards receiving on eight catches. Kavan Flewelling and Chandler Harding also caught a few passes for 50 and 40 yards.
The Wildcats had a bit more success on the ground with 102 rushing yards split between Kaylan Corkum (57 yards) and Diesel Sharpe (30 yards). Tj Borek, Wyatt Jacky, and Brock Neitz also contributed a few yards through the running game.
Stettler did most of their damage through the air off the arm of quarterback Slade Perry who threw for 188 yards on 10 completions. Wyatt Jacky and Brock Neitz both led the way each with 56 yards receiving. Evan Blanchard added 51 yards receiving and Kaylan Corkum had 25 yards.
After the first two weeks, the Cougars and Lightning sit on top of the standings at 2-0. Meanwhile, the Rams and Raiders fall to 1-1 followed by the Wildcats and Camrose at 0-1.
This week the teams will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 20 with the H.J. Cody Lakers headed to Camrose for a 7 p.m. matchup. At Setters Place in Red Deer, the Wildcats will take on the Cougars at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Lightning and Raiders at 7:30 p.m. The Lacombe Rams will be on a bye week.
