Central Alberta Predators rugby girls win silver in Edmonton

Local rugby players showed off their skills against the top players in the province last weekend.

Local rugby players showed off their skills against the top players in the province last weekend.

Competing in Edmonton at the annual Rugby Alberta’s Regional Sevens Championship, the Central Alberta Predators girls finished with silver and the boys ended up in sixth place.

The tournament featured the top U18 talent from Edmonton, Calgary, and Lethbridge as they competed for opportunities on the provincial squad.

Trying to defend their title from last year, the Predators girls squad finished 3-0 in pool play and won their semi-final 31-0.

In the final, they squared off with University of Alberta Athlete Academy team. The Predators pulled ahead late in the match on a long try from Shaylyn McNeil, but the Academy scored with no time left to earn gold.

Representing the Predators at the event were Aislynn Young (Red Deer), Gabby Sever (Rocky Mountian House), Sierra Stewart (Lacombe), Naomi Brunner (Red Deer), Hailey Holtkamp (Rimbey), Jada Holtkamp (Rimbey), Marni Giebelhaus (Rimbey), Brooklyn Perry (Stettler), Caydince Kabatoff (Lacombe), Janelle Agot (Innisfail), Shaylyn McNeill (Stettler), Katanna Rae (Red Deer), and Sydney Burchnall.

Both Predators teams will travel to Vancouver March 7th and 8th for another sevens event.
