The senior high school basketball season in the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA) has come to an end in central Alberta.

With zone and provincial championships all wrapped up, some teams within central Alberta closed the chapter on a successful season.

In the girl’s 4A provincial championship, the Lindsay Thurber senior girls continued their success from the regular season defeating Strathcona in their first game of the tournament 82-56.

Ranked sixth in the province, Thurber took on the league’s third-best school but lost 90-66.

In the senior boy’s 4A ASAA provincial championship at Jasper place, representing the central zone were the Lacombe Rams. In their first game, they lost to number two-ranked St. Mary’s 132-62. Following the loss, the Rams matched up against Cardston but couldn’t overcome a large deficit of 112-63.

In the 3A girls’ tournament in Wetaskiwin, the host team lost their first game to Strathcona Christian Academy knocking them down to Pool C. In that bracket, they beat Holy Rosary by one point before losing to Sexsmith Secondary.

The H.J. Cody senior girls won their first game with Holy Rosary to advance to the second round of the Pool-A bracket. However, in the next game, they lost to number two-ranked Sturgeon which knocked them down to the Pool B bracket. That next matchup they lost to number six-ranked Winston Churchill.

On the boys’ side, both Wetaskiwin and St. Joseph High School advanced to the second round in Pool A but lost their next game. Once they transitioned to Pool B they had a head-to-head matchup but Red Deer’s St. Joseph got the upper hand 81-79. St. Joseph went up against third-ranked Brooks for the chance to claim fifth place but lost 90-69.

Olds Koinonia made it to 1A senior boys provincials and made it all the way to the third round in Pool A before losing to the eventual provincial champions in Coaldale 91-59. Olds also had success on the girl’s side losing in the second round 50-30 but winning the ‘B’ bracket over St. Thomas More 74-44.

The Spruce View School senior boys basketball team, who play in the western league, celebrated an undefeated regular season and followed that up with a second-place finish in the league overall.
