On Tuesday the Western Hockey League (WHL) announced the rosters for the upcoming WHL Cup in Red Deer at the Peavey Mart Centrium.
From Oct. 23 - 27 over 80 players from the four western Canadian provinces including Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, and British Columbia will represent their province in the tournament.
From Central Alberta, goaltender Drake Mooney from Blackfalds and forward Crew Martinson from Olds will suit up for Team Alberta.
Mooney, who was drafted by the Regina Pats 82nd overall, in the fourth round of the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft, has suited up for the Prairie Hockey Academy U18 Prep team in Moose Jaw, Sask.
Martinson was taken in the second round, 24th overall by the Tri-City Americans, and is spending the 2024-25 season in Red Deer as a member of the U18 AAA Optimist Chiefs.
Meanwhile, Red Deer Rebels prospects defenceman Graeme Pickering and forward Cash Arcand-Vandale will suit up for their provinces. Pickering, who was taken in the first round, 15th overall, will play for Team Manitoba and second round pick Arcand-Vandale will represent Team Saskatchewan.
The tournament will begin as a round-robin style competition before playoffs begin over the weekend. They will feature the top 2009-born players and have featured plenty of athletes who've gone on to the NHL over the years.
Tickets are now available for the event, including a few different options such as a $ 10-day pass and $45 for a tournament pass, and they can also be purchased at the door.
