Cougars take girls soccer title

Cory van der Voort and Kelsey Paetz netted second-half goals two minutes apart to give the Notre Dame Cougars a 2-1 win over the Lindsay Thurber Raiders in the girls’ championship final of the Central Alberta High School Soccer League Saturday at RDC.

Melissa McLellan scored the Raiders’ goal in the final minute of the first half. Van der Voort was named MVP of the championship match.

In A-side semifinal play, the Cougars slipped past the Hunting Hills Lightning 1-0 on a goal from Nikki Macleod, and the Raiders — with goals from McLellan, Molli Macauley, Octavia Langan and Savannah Pratt — blanked the Sylvan Lake H.J. Cody Lakers 4-0.

Hunting Hills thumped H.J. Cody 6-1 in the third-place game. Scoring for the Lightning were Jennifer Hou with two goals, Rachel Kuz, Alisha Whissel, Natassia Wright and Merissa Mand, while Cassie Donaghy responded for the Lakers.

l The Lacombe Rams, with goals from Yvette Lyons and Savannah LaMarche, downed Central Alberta Christian 2-0 in the B-side final.

Lyons and Shannon Scott each scored twice and Michelle Fodor once for the Rams in a 5-0 semifinal win over Eckville.

In the other B semifinal, Kim Luyness sniped three goals, Jessica Prins and Natalie Ellens each scored twice and Tamara Stang also connected for Central Alberta Christian in an 8-1 win over Alix. Alix got a goal from Maxine Drost to defeat Eckville 1-0 in the third-place match.
