DEWINTON — Mitch Evanecz closed the gap in a hurry.

The Red Deer Golf and Country Club member fired a 6-under 65 Wednesday to move within three shots of leader Jamie Kureluk of Calgary Cottonwood in the RBC Insurance Alberta Open at Carnmoney.

Evanecz was eight strokes back of Kureluk following the opening round but now has a legitimate chance of capturing the Open title heading into today’s final 18 holes. The Red Deer golfer had a 36-hole total of 134 following Monday’s 69, with Kureluk at 131 (61-70).

Kris Wasylowich of Lethbridge sat third heading into today’s final round with a 137 total (65-72), while Ryan Yip of Calgary Bearspaw (66-72-138) and Wes Heffernan of Calgary Silver Springs (70-68-138) were next in line.

Carson Kallis of the Red Deer Golf and Country Club (RDG&CC) and Troy Butterfield of Stettler Pheasantback were the only other Central Alberta golfers to make the cut. Kallis was in 20th spot with a 144 total that included rounds of 75-69 and Butterfield was tied for 25th at 147 (79-68).
