Evanecz second at CIS championship

Mitch Evanecz of Red Deer finished second in the men’s individual competition of the rain-shortened Canadian university-college golf championship Thursday, losing to Phillippe-Andre Bannon of the University of Montreal in a playoff.

FREDERICTON, N.B. — Mitch Evanecz of Red Deer finished second in the men’s individual competition of the rain-shortened Canadian university-college golf championship Thursday, losing to Phillippe-Andre Bannon of the University of Montreal in a playoff.

Evanecz, representing the U of Victoria, turned in rounds of 71-72-69 for a 4-under total of 212, tying Bannon (69-69-74) for top spot. The U of Victoria tied for fourth in the men’s team category, won by Laval.

d Deer golfer Jocelyn Alford, now of Calgary, placed third in the women’s individual category while representing the women’s team champion U of British Columbia. Alford managed a 54-hole total of 10-over 226 (75-77-74). Anne Balser of the U of Victoria won the women’s individual title in a playoff.
