Five Red Deer Rebels attending NHL camps this week

Three were drafted and two were undrafted

A handful of Red Deer Rebels players are attending National Hockey League (NHL) training camps in hopes of making the team for the upcoming season.

Captain of the Rebels Jayden Grubbe is headed to the big apple to attend the New York Rangers camp. The Calgary, native was drafted by the Rangers 65th overall in the third round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. The forward has played for the Rebels since the 2019-20 season and has amassed 21 goals, and 46 assists for 67 points in three seasons.

After forward Ben King had a career year last season he was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the fourth round 107th overall. King went undrafted in the last two NHL Entry Drafts before this year and is in Anaheim to attend the club’s training camp. King has played three seasons in Red Deer after being traded by the Swift Current Broncos during the 2019-20 season and during his time in Red Deer he has scored 80 goals, and 91 assists for 171 points.

Newly acquired defenceman Mats Lindgren will be joining the Buffalo Sabres in their camp after he was drafted this summer 106th overall in the fourth round. The North Vancouver product played the last two seasons with the Kamloops Blazers where he’s fired in six goals, and 48 assists for 54 points before requesting a trade during the offseason.

Defenceman Christoffer Sedoff didn’t have far to travel for his camp invite with the Calgary Flames. The Finland, native has played two seasons in Red Deer after he was picked in the WHL Import Draft by the Rebels. He has yet to be drafted or signed by an NHL club but was invited by the Flames this summer after he had seven goals and 54 assists for 61 points during the 2021-22 season.

Defenceman Jace Weir was also invited to an NHL camp this week after he went undrafted in this year’s NHL Entry Draft. The 18-year-old from Coldstream, B.C. is attending the Vegas Golden Knights camp after receiving an invite. In his first full season with the Rebels last year, Weir had five goals and 20 assists for 25 points.
