The Sylvan Lake Gulls’ historic win streak came to an end on Tuesday night.
After setting a franchise record for eight consecutive wins on Monday the Gulls dropped a 5-1 loss to the Brooks Bombers.
Before the franchise’s newest record, the longest winning streak recorded in the Gulls’ short three years of existence was seven straight victories to end the summer 2021 season.
During the run that first began on July 2, the Gulls beat the Fort McMurray Giants twice, the Lethbridge Bulls twice, the Brooks Bombers twice, and the Medicine Hat Mavericks twice.
The most recent came against the Bulls on Monday where the Gulls came out on the right side of a 2-1 win at home.
However on Tuesday that all came to an end in Brooks.
Brooks jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning and Sylvan Lake never seemed to recover.
The Gulls struggled on offence throughout the game and only managed to record two hits.
Sylvan Lake added a run in the top of the sixth inning but Brooks answered in the bottom half adding two more runs.
That was all the Bombers needed to halt the Gulls in a 5-1 loss.
Foster City, California’s Matty Fung and Lehi, Utah’s Easton Jones were the only two members of the Gulls to get a hit.
Starting pitcher Josh Tucker allowed three runs on seven hits but struck out 11 batters in five innings.
Tyler McWillie from Watrous, Sask., replaced Tucker in the sixth inning and allowed two runs on two hits in two innings. He also struck out five batters in the process.
Olds’ Jaxon Zanolli and Red Deer’s Jared Arnold both pitched in the eighth inning to close the game. Zanolli struck out a batter meanwhile Arnold got the final out.
The Gulls have Wednesday off before hosting the Swift Current 57s on Thursday and Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Gulls Stadium. On Sunday they’ll head to Okotoks to take on the Dawgs at 2:05 p.m. after the WCBL All-Star Game on Saturday.
Josh Tucker, Ty Boudreau, Hank Dodson, Shea Bowen, and Nick Groves will all represent the Gulls at the All-Star Game. Assistant coach Wyatt McKnight will also be a part of the West All-Stars coaching staff.
