Hamill grabs 2 bronze, 1 gold

Mark Hamill of Penhold, who plays out of the Red Deer Club and the Simon Tennis School, won a pair of bronze medals in the Champs Division for athletes ranked in the top eight and also struck gold in the U18 boys’ doubles with Ukhil Metha of Edmonton.

Hamill and Metha downed Luke Manley of Edmonton and Alex Berdnikoff of Calgary 6-4, 6-4.

Earlier Hamill beat Jimmy Le of Calgary 6-1, 6-1 in the U18 singles third-place match and defeated Metha 6-1, 6-2 in the U16 bronze medal contest.

Manley defeated Metha 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the U18 final while Jordan Sluchinski of Edmonton stopped Le 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the U16 final.

Bruno Simon of Red Deer took third in the U14 boys’ singles, beating Sidney Yap of Calgary 6-3, 6-4.

Harrison Scott of Calgary downed Jeffrey James of Edmonton 6-2, 6-0 in the final.

Simon and David Laschuk of Edmonton lost 1-6, 0-6 to Jackson Koke and Josh Peck, both of Calgary, in U14 boys’ doubles third-place contest.

Koke and Peck earlier met in the U12 singles final with Koke recording a 6-1, 6-1 victory.

In Champs girls’ action Tereza Simonova of Red Deer and Lara Stakic of Calgary beat Ashleigh Jacobs of High River and Kiko Cunningham of Calgary 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 to take fifth place in the U14 girls doubles.

Jena Cheng of Edmonton was a double winner Saturday, winning the U14 and U18 singles titles.

Cheng beat Alexia Lombardi of Edmonton 6-2, 6-1 in the U14 final and Kirsten Scott of Calgary 6-3, 6-2 in the U18 championship.

Claire Koke of Calgary downed Cunningham 6-2, 6-2 in the U12 final while Kristina Sanjevic of Edmonton stopped Kelsi Oliphant of Calgary 6-1, 6-1 in the U16 final.

In Challenge Division play, which is for athletes outside the top eight, Penhold’s Natalie Hamill lost 3-6, 6-4, 2-6 to Natalia Lombardi of Calgary in the U18 girls’ singles final.

In boy’s U16 division quarter-final action Daniel Henshell of Edmonton beat Jayden Halsey of Red Deer 6-1, 6-1 and Jerrod Parker of Calgary downed Morgan See of Red Deer 6-1, 6-1.
