Hamill settles for silver, twice

Hamill dropped a 0-6, 2-6 decision to top-seeded Luke Manley of Edmonton in the U18 boys’ singles then placed second in the U18 doubles when his partner Akhil Mehta of Edmonton was forced to retire because of a wrist injury. As a result the team of Manley and Curran Wearmouth of Calgary won gold.

Meanwhile in girls’ U12 competition Tereza Simonov, who is the daughter of Red Deer Tennis Club head coach Rene Simon, finished third in the U12 singles and U14 doubles.

In singles she beat Gracie Sprung of Calgary 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation final while in doubles she teamed with Lara Stakic of Calgary. The pair finished with a 1-2 record after losing to Maja Dragovic and Claire Koke of Calgary 0-6, 1-6 and 1-6, 1-6 to Maya Dukaric of Calgary and Jacobs of Ashleigh Jacobs of High River on Saturday.

Dragovic and Koke finished first with a 3-0 record while Dukaric and Jacobs were 2-1.

Jena Cheng of Edmonton enjoyed a good day, winning both the U16 and U18 girls’ singles and the U18 doubles.

Cheng beat Allessandra Miller of Calgary 6-0, 6-3 in the U16 final and posted a 3-0 record in round-robin play in the U18 singles. Mikaela Bennett of Calgary was second at 2-1, losing 1-6, 0-6 to Cheng.

Cheng and Bennett hooked up to post a 3-0 mark in the doubles.

Koke downed Dragovic 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the U14 singles final.

Danny Wu of Edmonton won the boys’ U12 singles crown with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Maximilian Szczpien of Edmonton while Jamal Hinds of Edmonton beat Nolan Chan of Edmonton 6-1, 6-2 in U14 singles,

Harrison Scott won the U16 boys’ singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jerrod Parker of Calgary.

Zack Perala of Tofield and Chan won the U14 doubles title with a 6-3, 4-6, 13-11 win over Ayush Gupta of Edmonton and Jackson Koke of Calgary.

In the challenger competition, Kobus Badenhorst of Red Deer reached the semifinals of the U16 boys’ consolation side, before losing 4-2, 2-4, 1-4 to David Laschuk of Edmonton. He beat Eric Kenneth of Edmonton 4-1, 1-4, 4-2 in the quarter-finals.

Red Deer’s Bruno Simon downed James Kwan of Lethbridge 4-2, 4-1 before losing to Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge 4-2, 3-5, 2-4 in the U16 consolation quarter-finals.

Simon and Badenhorst will compete in doubles today with their final match in the four-team round-robin following their 11 a.m. match.
