Hoops stars earn RDC Athlete of the Week honours

On a successful weekend for RDC Basketball on the court, a pair of guards earned RDC Athlete of the Week honours.

On a successful weekend for RDC Basketball on the court, a pair of guards earned RDC Athlete of the Week honours.

Queens guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal and Kings guard Tyronn King were the recipients for their performance on the weekend.

Garica-Bernal, a third-year guard from Spain came close to posting a triple-double in a road win Friday, then followed that up by becoming the all-time Queens steals leader, picking up the 148th of her career Saturday.

In Friday’s win, she had eight points, eight rebounds and four assists. Saturday, she chipped in seven more points, grabbed five rebounds, two steals and one assist in a 73-35 win over the Ambrose University Lions. She ranks ninth in the league with 9.1 rebounds per game and has averaged 9.5 points per game.

King, a fourth-year from Toronto, Ont. also had two stellar showings as the Kings earned a split with the Lions. King picked up 21 points, nine rebounds, five assists and a steal in a 106-90 loss to Ambrose Friday. Saturday, he upped his game and posted a game-high 33 points, including seven of 10 from three-point range. He also had six assists and four steals. He currently ranks ninth in league scoring, averaging 18.5 points per game, while picking up 7.5 rebounds and 5.2 assists.

Both the Kings and Queens will round out the regular season on the weekend with a pair of games against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
